How to look more confident in your headshot (even if you hate being photographed)
Most people think confidence is natural in a photo… but the truth is, it’s something you can create with posture, expression, and direction. If you’ve ever looked at a photo of yourself and thought, “I don’t look like that in real life,” you’re not alone, and we can fix it!
A great headshot photographer doesn’t just take your picture.
They coach you, guide you, and help you bring out expressions that feel real, not forced.
Below are the exact techniques I use in every session so you look confident, approachable, and professional — even if you usually freeze in front of the camera.
Start With Strong, Relaxed Posture
Confidence begins with your body.
The trick is to look upright and engaged, without being stiff.
Try this:
Stand tall as if a string is lifting the top of your head
Roll your shoulders up, then back, then down
Take a slow breath out
You want to increase the distance between your earlobes and your shoulders. This keeps you from slouching, and makes you look taller.
Get that chin out!
This is one of the most effective, subtle tricks to look confident.
Bringing your forehead and chin out:
makes your jawline stronger
makes your eyes more engaged
signals confidence and openness
It’s the same body language people use naturally when they’re interested in a conversation.
The Secret to a Natural Smile: Smiling With the Eyes
You’ll never hear me say “smile”.
That’s why fake smiles happen, and people can sniff them out from a mile away.
Instead, I’ll coach a great smile:
Rather saying smile I’m going to say something silly to ellicit a smile
Make sure your eyes are part of the smile. If your mouth is doing all the work, it’ll look fake.
These micro-adjustments activate the muscles around your eyes — the real “confidence cue.”
Dress for the job you want
Confidence isn’t just posture and great smiles — it’s also your clothing.
We tend to feel more confident when we wear am outfit that fits well. No, don’t bring the tux from your wedding from 20 years ago.
Wear:
clean, fitted layers
structured fabrics
colors that support your skin tone
minimal distractions
When you feel good in your outfit, you see it in your expression instantly.
