How To Plan For Acting Headshots, Rockville

Rockville Headshot Photographer

In this blog post, I want to share some tips on how to plan for acting headshots. Headshots for actors are a different process than headshots for a CEO or for your LinkedIn profile. With LinkedIn, you want a solid shot that shows confidence and approachability. You want an image that shows the real you and your personality.

For actors/actresses, I think It’s more important to cover several bases in terms of expression. In my sessions with actors, we’l change the background color, outfits, we’ll shoot for a variety of expressions as well.

What Kind Of Role Do You Want To Read For?

I like to ask ever actor and actress what kind of roles they’re reading for now, and what kind of role you’d like to be reading for. Take some time and think about what kind of roles do you want to land. If you want to get a spot on Law And Order, we need to shoot for that. We can adjust the lighting, the background and plan for a wardrobe that will fit that kind of role, then, we aim for expressions that will match that. I have a unique coaching style for all of my clients where we focus on expression. All my images show up on a larger laptop for us to view in realtime, so we can make changes right away.

Plan To Arrive Early

It’s best to arrive a few minutes before your session starts so you have time to get all your clothes on the rack, use the restroom and take a deep breath. The last thing you want is to come late and feel rushed!

Keep Makeup And Jewelry Simple

For makeup and jewelry the best thing is to keep it super simple. Large jewelry pieces can take the focus off of your face and expression, so , either keep em small and simple or just leave them off. My opinion on makeup is the same, keep it very simple and conservative. The camera is very high resolution so it picks up everything. Less is more in this case.

A Few Helpful Tips For Your Acting Headshot Session

Mindset

Time to mentally prepare for your session. Come in with a positive attitude, and open mind, knowing you’re going to get a killer set of headshots. being in a positive mindset can help make the process smooth. Be willing to try the different expressions I throw out, if you’re dead set on ONE type of image, it can make the session stressful and that expression may or may not happen.

Bring Clothing And Accessories With You

Have all your outfits dry cleaned and ready to go a few days before hand. Nothing worse than coming in and all your clothes that you want to shoot in are wrinkled. Any accessories that you have, bring them with you. Bring a comb, lip balm, any product for your hair, hair frizz spray, makeup and jewelry. Bring all of these items, we may not need them, but better to have them.

Okay, while not an exhaustive list, it’s the top hits of what to think about when planning for your acting headshots. If you have questions or want to book a session with me, click below and I’ll be happy to reach back out.
